Wild & Free is a 16×20 Islandic horse acrylic painting I finished last spring for my 10yr old daughter Ruhiyya (Ru).

The horse is an animal that she has always connected to. It is really smart, helpful and hardworking, but also loves to run and jump, be wild and free, and has an huge amount of strength and courage.

This is Ru. She is fearless when talking to people and trying new things. I have never heard her say a mean thing about or to anyone. She gets along with everyone she meets. She doesn’t feel the need to heavily conform to those around her. She thinks for herself and has an enormous amount of strength and grit. She loves to travel to new places and meet new people. I am so honored to know this young warrior woman and hope that she continues to resist my attempts to tame her too much, and inspire me to be myself no matter who I am with or what I am doing.

The ‘Wild & Free’ painting process:

  1. I started this painting by sketching out the outline in pencil.
  2. I then added all the black parts and dark blues and browns.
  3. Moved on to adding more detail on the horses body with blue and white, and the background with greens, yellows and orange.
  4. I then covered a lot of the background in a dark reddish color, which I thought made it look like it was more Australian than Islandic, so I added more purple and light green.
  5. I also added a light layer of red and blue over the body of the horse to give it a bit more depth and glow.
